The most economical and environmentally friendly FDCA for your success with PEF
Treemera has arguably developed the most economical and environmentally friendly process to produce FDCA – the key raw material for PEF.
Let’s replace PET with PEF together
PEF is superior to PET in many key properties
and PEF is 100% recyclable
O2 barrier for carbonated liquids and preventing food spoilage
tensile strength for lighter packaging
modulus for lighter packaging
melting temperature (Tm) 215°C (PEF) instead of 255°C (PET)
CO2 barrier for aluminium
and glass bottles
H2O barrier for water bottles
glass transition (Tg)
for hot filling of food
100% recyclable
PEF is a 100% recyclable bio-based polymer derived from plants. It can replace the plastic industry’s giant polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is a durable material derived from petroleum. PEF is the next generation polyester, having better mechanical and barrier properties than the largest selling polyester (PET).
Eco-Friendly Process
- Less waste because of high product yields and fewer by-products
- Low energy consumption
- No critical waste; solvents used are completely recycled
- Critical substances are neither needed nor produced in the process
Economically Friendly Process
- Low investment required as PEF can be processed on the same plants as PET is currently processed
- Cost-effective production enables fast adoption of the new chemical in various applications and industries
Eco-Friendly Products
- PEF production consumes significantly less energy than PET production
CO2 emissions are massively reduced
- Barrier additives are not needed, so PEF is 100% recyclable
Applications with unlimited possibilities
PEF can be completely recycled and is made from renewable raw materials.
There is no critical waste or use of critical substances in the process.
PEF BOTTLES
Bottles made with PEF are superior to PET bottles with better barrier, thermal and mechanical properties. PEF made with Treemera’s FDCA is price competitive with PET. The improved barrier properties enable more applications that can also replace cans and glass bottles at a fraction of the cost.
PEF FILMS
PEF has valuable future applications in films. The significantly improved barrier properties make this a superior product in flexible food packaging and gives a longer shelf life to perishable foods.
PEF FIBERS
PEF can also be used in apparel, carpets, home furnishings, disposable commodities, fabrics, diapers, filters and industrial fibers.
FUTURE USES
Although PEF is the primary initial use of FDCA in the market, there is potential for completely new markets that were once cost-prohibitive. One of the larger expected potential applications is in polyamides. Polyamides include products such as nylons and engineered plastics.
New technology for future eco-plastics
The starting material is sucrose, starch, high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) or even cellulose.
Conventional FDCA processes generally start with costly fructose because glucose leads to unwanted by-products. The conversion to FDCA is carried out at high temperatures with hazardous chemicals and comparatively low yields, leading to cumbersome purification processes of the final product and corresponding amounts of critical waste.
Treemera technology, on the other hand, uses a patented enzymatic process to convert the glucose at ambient temperature to obtain high purity fructose. This is done with very low energy input and minimal waste production.
The intermediate 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is produced from fructose in a very fast reaction with high yields.
The next step is the oxidation of HMF to FDCA with a patented enzymatic process. The process is done in water at ambient temperature and in high concentration. It achieves very high yields with minimal energy consumption.
This most economical and environmentally friendly process to produce furandicarboxylic acid makes Treemera FDCA the perfect key raw material for your PEF.
